On 2nd April 2008, the cornerstone for Metropolis Grid was laid by sponsor Peter Jacob by registering the domain
www.hypergrid.org. From the beginning the grid was designed as an open, non-commercial grid. The focus was and is on the free development of individual ideas and projects in a stable environment, without commercial pressure. Over the years, Metropolis became a home for artists of all styles.
The fortunes of the Metropolis Grid were initially managed by a single admin (Lena Vanilli). Today, five administrators take care of the welfare of the Grid: Sheera Khan, Zak Spot, Lena Vanilli, Uncle CM and Wanda Shigella. Furthermore several supporters help newcomers in different languages.
Metropolis Grid started out as a German-language grid. Meanwhile, in addition to the forum, the website and the wiki are also available in English. So, the Metro is bi-lingual.
The Metropolis main grid is not a test grid. Stability and usability for the end user is the focus of the grid. The OpenSimulator versions that are used in Metropolis have special features that facilitate the connection of home servers to the grid. For example no external provider for dynamic IP addresses is required to operate a Sim on your home machine permanently.
Over time many tutorials and how-to’s have emerged which describe the many complexities of OpenSimulator technology in an understandable way. 90% of self-hosting people are now able to connect their regions to the grid solely through those tutorials without enquiries and background knowledge.
Many remarkable projects started at Metropolis: the Parliament, the re-construction of Pompeii, the festival "Summer of Arts"... ; to name just a few.
Besides the well known Metropolis Grid we are also running closed educational Grids like "Yunis".
