There are now an additional 900 terrains added to the region Terrains in Metropolis (hypergrid.org:8002:terrains), varying in size between 256x256 m and 2560x2560 m. Like the last batch, these terrains are soft, hilly islands or continents and released to the public domain, CC0.

The new terrains are grouped by size and scale, with sizes 256x256 m (1x1 region), 512x512 m (2x2 regions), 768x768 m (3x3 regions), 1024x1024 m (4x4 regions), 1280x1280 m (5x5 regions), 1536x1536 m (6x6 regions), 1792x1792 m (7x7 regions), 2048x2048 m (8x8 regions), 2304x2304 m (9x9 regions), 2560x2560 m (10x10 regions), and scales small, medium and large in details, with 30 new terrains in each group.

Each terrain comes in a ZIP archive including a ReadMe text file, a PNG (.png) preview, the full terrain in both LLRAW (.raw) and RAW32 (.r32/.f32) format, and, when larger than 256x256 m, the terrain split into 256x256 m panes in LLRAW (.raw) format for use in standard regions, with relative positions indicated on the PNG preview.

In total, there are 1645 terrains available, of which 292 256x256 m, 150 512x512 m, 150 768x768 m, 150 1024x1024 m, 153 1280x1280 m, 150 1536x1536 m, 150 1792x1792 m, 150 2048x2048 m, 150 2304x2304 m, and 150 2560x2560 m. The total area of these terrains corresponds to 57967 256x256 m regions or 3799 km2.

With this update, all old and new 256x256 m terrains are viewable in the adjacent preview region MB Sea 65, while the new terrains and larger are viewable in the new preview var-regions Terrains 1 - Terrains 10.

There is a bug in the terrain handling preventing terrains bigger than 256x256 m to be loaded as LLRAW (.raw) files, so therefor all terrains bigger than that are available as RAW32 (.r32/.f32) files as well. There is also a patch committed to fix the bug (http://opensimulator.org/mantis/view.php?id=7415), but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it to be included.

I sleep when Maggie hits me over the head with the frying pan for nor letting go of the computer when I'm "engaged" and she has dinner ready. But seriously, producing these 1500 terrains was a lot less work than it may seem.

It actually started out with terrains being spills from when Maggie and I needed a number of terrains to pick from for our own projects. I figured it was a waste to just trash the rest, since I couldn't find any good selection of free terrains when I needed it myself. Hence the idea for the region Terrains.

Then it kind of escalated, and since I'm lazy, I tend to automatize things. So when we needed a new selection of multi-region terrains to pick from for a new project, I wanted to see how far I could push the automatization. The result became the 1500 new terrains, created, converted, split and packaged by a script. My sim server was idling at 95% anyway, so I figured I could dedicate one core (25%) for a couple of weeks to create terrains.

The in-world infrastructure took a bit of time, with a new floor and detailing to the terrain shop, 30 new vendors with updated scripts, and the 10 new var-regions with vendors to preview the terrains, but once that was in place, the only manual work required was uploading the previews to Metropolis and dropping them in the right vendors, fighting some asset and inventory service lag on the way.

So in the end, I slept well, but my sim server only slept for 70% instead of 95% of the time for a couple of weeks.

Wow! I stand corrected. Justin CC merged my patch, along with another patch for an error in llGetPrimitiveParams/llGetLinkPrimitiveParams, so hopefully varregion LLRAW terrain handling will work properly in the upcoming 0.8.1 release already.
